PSF [Passenger ship familiarization]

A passenger ship is a type of merchant ship. Its main purpose is to carry passengers from one place to another across the sea. These ships are designed to provide comfort and safety for the people traveling on them.

Three Main Types of Passenger Ships

There are three important types of passenger ships:

  1. Ferry
  2. Ocean Liner
  3. Cruise Liner

1.Ferry

A ferry is a merchant vessel that is used to carry passengers, and sometimes vehicles and cargo, across a body of water. Ferries usually travel short distances. When a passenger ferry makes many stops along the way, it is sometimes called a water bus or a water taxi.

2.Ocean Liner

An ocean liner is the traditional form of passenger ship. In the past, these liners operated on fixed schedules and traveled to all inhabited parts of the world. They were mainly used for long-distance transportation of passengers.

3.Cruise Liner

Cruise ships are large passenger ships that are used mostly for vacation and leisure. Unlike ocean liners, which focus on transporting people from one place to another, cruise ships usually follow round-trip journeys. They visit different ports of call, where passengers can go ashore for tours, which are known as “shore excursions”.

Passenger Ship Sizes

Passenger ships are classified into three size groups depending on how many passengers they can carry:

Small Ships

Small ships usually carry no more than 350 passengers. Because they are smaller, they give passengers a more intimate and less crowded cruise experience compared to bigger ships.

Medium Ships

Medium-sized ships typically carry anywhere between 800 and 2,500 passengers. Like small ships, their routes often include a mix of unusual and popular ports. Even though they carry over a thousand passengers, they can still feel similar to large ships in terms of atmosphere.

Large Ships

Large cruise ships carry over 3,500 passengers. These ships usually offer a wide variety of restaurants and many different entertainment options. They normally stop at the world’s most popular ports. However, because of their large size, they cannot enter small or hidden harbors. They can only visit crowded and well-known destinations.
