Emergencies that could possibly lead to abandoning ship include collision, stranding, adverse reaction of dangerous goods or hazardous bulk materials, shifting of cargo, ship fire or explosion, hull failure, and foundering.
The muster list and emergency signals must be posted in conspicuous places throughout the ship. The muster list shows the station to which each person is assigned, the duties to be performed, and the survival craft to which each person is assigned.
Emergency signals are sounded on the ship’s whistle or general alarm and indicate the type of emergency. When the general emergency alarm is sounded, all persons must go to their muster stations.
The SOLAS training manual is specific to the ship and is located in places where it can be easily accessed by the crew. It contains instructions on the use of all life-saving appliances.
Safety symbols and escape route indicators are displayed on board to guide crew and passengers to muster stations and survival craft, especially in low visibility or blackout conditions.
