The main life-saving appliances normally carried on ships are lifebuoys, lifejackets, survival craft (lifeboats and liferafts), rescue boats, immersion suits/anti-exposure suits, thermal protective aids, and emergency radio equipment including EPIRB and SART.
Lifebuoys are distributed around the ship, usually with self-igniting lights and self-activating smoke signals attached to some of them.
Lifejackets are provided for every person on board plus additional ones at muster stations. Different sizes are available for adults, children, and oversized persons.
Immersion suits and anti-exposure suits are provided for every person assigned to the rescue boat and for persons on passenger ships where required. They must be readily accessible.
Thermal protective aids are carried in survival craft and are required for persons not provided with immersion suits.
