Course Overview and Objectives.
The Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) course is designed to equip seafarers with essential knowledge and awareness required to work safely and responsibly onboard ships. This course introduces learners to fundamental safety principles, accident prevention methods, and expected standards of behavior in the maritime working environment.
The course familiarizes seafarers with shipboard routines, safety procedures, and emergency preparedness, enabling them to respond effectively to potential risks and hazardous situations. Emphasis is placed on developing a safety-conscious attitude and understanding the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining a safe and efficient shipboard operation.
In line with the requirements of the STCW Convention, the PSSR course addresses key aspects of personal well-being, safe working practices, stress and fatigue management, emergency procedures, pollution prevention, and shipboard organization. The course also focuses on social responsibilities, including teamwork, communication, discipline, and professional conduct while living and working in a confined maritime environment.
Additionally, this course highlights the impact of human factors on safety at sea, such as interpersonal relationships, cultural differences, fatigue, stress, and substance abuse. By completing this course, learners will gain the knowledge and awareness necessary to contribute positively to shipboard safety, environmental protection, and overall operational effectiveness.
