Actions to be taken in case of an oil/chemical spillage and pool fire:
- Prompt initiation of the Emergency Shutdown (ESD) limits the amount of liquid spilled and, due to the fish plate, restricts overflow of cargo overboard.
- Restrict sources of ignition to prevent vapour ignition.
- Gently spread foam over the pool fire to smother it and restrict spreading.
- Never direct jets of water onto burning liquid, as this causes a violent increase in flame and spreads the fire.
- When contained in drip trays, liquid may spill onto the deck; avoid water jets in such cases.
- Wear full protective clothing and use water spray protection.
