Fire is one of the most dangerous emergencies that can occur onboard a ship. Unlike fires on land, shipboard fires are fought primarily by the crew, often while the vessel is isolated at sea with limited external assistance. Therefore, every seafarer must be thoroughly trained in fire prevention, detection, and firefighting procedures.

When a fire occurs in the cargo area, engine room, accommodation spaces, or any other part of the ship, the following general actions should be taken:

• Immediately sound the fire alarm.
• Assemble the designated emergency response team.
• Account for all personnel, especially anyone who may be inside the affected area.
• Take immediate action to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.
• Initiate appropriate firefighting measures, including the release of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into enclosed spaces where applicable.
• Prepare lifeboats and other survival craft in case evacuation becomes necessary.
• Carry out all additional support actions required to control the emergency and protect the ship.

Prompt action, proper coordination, and adherence to emergency procedures are essential for minimizing damage and protecting lives during a shipboard fire.
