A fractured bone should be handled with extreme care to avoid causing additional injury.

The injured limb should first be placed in the most comfortable position possible to reduce pain. It should then be immobilized to prevent movement that could worsen the fracture or cause bone fragments to pierce surrounding tissues.

For fractures of the upper limb, the arm should be supported using a triangular sling, positioning it comfortably across the chest.

For fractures of the lower limb, a splint should be applied to immobilize the injured leg. If no splint is available, the injured leg may be secured to the uninjured leg to provide support during transportation.

When transporting an injured person under difficult conditions, such as in rough seas, every effort should be made to minimize unnecessary movement and keep the casualty stable throughout the journey.
