Causes of Asphyxiation
Asphyxiation occurs when the body is deprived of sufficient oxygen. During shipboard fires, it may result from:
- Oxygen depletion caused by the fire itself.
- Fire extinguishing gases replacing breathable air inside enclosed spaces.
Without immediate rescue and treatment, asphyxiation can rapidly become fatal.
