Causes of Asphyxiation

Asphyxiation occurs when the body is deprived of sufficient oxygen. During shipboard fires, it may result from:

  • Oxygen depletion caused by the fire itself.
  • Fire extinguishing gases replacing breathable air inside enclosed spaces.

Without immediate rescue and treatment, asphyxiation can rapidly become fatal.
