Totally enclosed lifeboats provide maximum protection for survivors against harsh weather conditions, fire, smoke, and heavy seas. Each lifeboat is completely enclosed by a rigid, watertight structure that protects the occupants throughout rescue operations.

The enclosure is designed to:
- Provide complete shelter from environmental conditions.
- Allow entry through watertight hatches that can be securely closed after boarding.
- Permit the lifeboat to be rowed if mechanical propulsion becomes unavailable.
- Provide each seating position with a safety belt capable of securely restraining a person weighing up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds), even if the lifeboat capsizes.
