Fire drills are an essential component of shipboard emergency preparedness. They should be carefully planned and conducted regularly to provide realistic practice for different emergency situations that may arise depending on the type of vessel and the nature of its cargo.

Each fire drill should include the following activities:

  1. Reporting to designated emergency stations and preparing to perform the duties assigned in the muster list.
  2. Starting the fire pump and operating at least two fire hoses to confirm that the firefighting system is functioning properly.
  3. Inspecting fireman’s outfits and all personal protective equipment used during firefighting operations.
  4. Testing all communication equipment used during emergencies.
  5. Verifying the operation of watertight doors, fire doors, ventilation dampers, and ventilation inlets and outlets within the drill area.
  6. Confirming that preparations for a possible abandonment of the ship can be carried out efficiently if required.

After every drill, all equipment used must be restored immediately to its fully operational condition. Any faults, defects, or deficiencies identified during the exercise should be corrected without delay to ensure the ship remains fully prepared for future emergencies.
