Every merchant ship is equipped with survival craft and rescue boats designed to protect lives during emergencies at sea. These craft must always be stored on open decks close to their designated launching positions so that they can be launched quickly and safely whenever required.
Survival craft should remain in a constant state of readiness. Under normal circumstances, they should be capable of being launched by two trained crew members within five minutes. Rescue boats must also be fully equipped in accordance with the requirements of the International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code.
Cargo ships must carry sufficient survival craft to accommodate every person onboard. Certain specialized vessels, such as chemical tankers, are required to carry lifeboats fitted with self-contained air support systems that comply with applicable international safety standards.
Every crew member should successfully complete approved training in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB) after completing the required period of seagoing service. This training ensures that crew members are capable of launching, operating, and maintaining survival craft during emergencies.
