Whenever circumstances permit, survival craft should be boarded while they are still secured alongside the ship and before they are lowered into the water. Boarding can usually be carried out safely by using the embarkation ladders provided on the vessel.
If it becomes absolutely necessary to jump into a survival craft, great care must be taken to avoid injuring other occupants already inside. Survivors should never jump directly onto other people. Before jumping, footwear, sharp objects, or any equipment that could damage the liferaft or injure other occupants should be removed whenever possible.
Jumping into a survival craft should always be considered a last resort and only carried out when no safer method of boarding is available.
