Free-fall launching systems are designed with several important safety features, including:
- Prevention of accidental release during normal operations.
- Boarding is not possible if the securing arrangements cannot be released from inside the lifeboat.
- Two independent actions are required before the release mechanism can be activated.
- The release mechanism is clearly marked and protected against accidental or premature operation.
- The release system can be tested without actually launching the lifeboat.
- A secondary launching arrangement is provided, allowing the lifeboat to be lowered in a controlled manner using an off-load release system whenever free-fall launching is not appropriate.
