Hanging is a form of strangulation and may be accidental or deliberate. The face appears dark blue, swollen, with protruding eyes.

First aid:

  1. Cut and remove the noose while supporting the body. Loosen tight clothing and treat as an unconscious casualty.
  2. If breathing has stopped, begin artificial respiration; if the heart has stopped, perform heart compression. Provide oxygen once breathing resumes.
  3. Maintain continuous observation until medical care is available.

Standard dressing

A standard dressing consists of a sterile gauze pad attached to a bandage. The pad must remain sterile and should not touch anything before application.

Note
Always use a dressing larger than the wound.
Wrap the bandage firmly to secure the pad properly around the affected area.
