If a person’s clothing is on fire, the most effective method to extinguish the flames is to use a dry-powder fire extinguisher immediately. If one is not available, lay the person down and smother the flames by wrapping them in any available material, or throw buckets of water over them, or use a hose if available. Ensure that all smouldering clothing is completely extinguished.
Note. The powder from a fire extinguisher generally does not cause significant eye damage. Most people instinctively close their eyes tightly when sprayed with powder. Any powder that enters the eyes should be washed out immediately after the fire has been extinguished and while the burns are being cooled.
