Communicating with doctors

Whenever a patient is sent to see a doctor, it is important to provide a written letter or form along with them. This is not only a matter of courtesy but also ensures that the doctor receives accurate and complete information. Since the crew member will usually be unfamiliar to the doctor, and there may also be language barriers, a clearly written document is often easier to understand than verbal communication.

The letter should include basic personal details of the crew member such as name and date of birth. It should also contain information about the ship, including the ship’s name, port, agent, and owner.

The medical section of the letter must be organized in a clear and systematic manner. It should provide a complete summary of all relevant information about the patient’s condition. This includes details of the illness or injury, any treatment already given, and copies of medical records or advice received from doctors at previous ports.
