Note on malingering

Malingering refers to pretending to be ill or exaggerating symptoms for personal gain. The person may either have no illness or may exaggerate an existing one. In such cases, a careful history and thorough examination should be carried out, including checking temperature and pulse rate.

Treatment

If the diagnosis is not certain, the patient should be given the benefit of the doubt and kept under observation until examined by a doctor. During this time, the patient should remain in bed, follow a light diet, maintain regular bowel movements, and avoid smoking and alcohol.
