Electrical burns and electrocution
Ensure your own safety before approaching a person in contact with electricity. If possible, switch off the electrical supply. If this is not possible, insulate yourself before approaching and touching the casualty by using rubber gloves, wearing rubber boots, or standing on an insulating rubber mat.
Electrical lines may be removed from the casualty using a wooden pole, chair, insulated cord, or another non-metallic object.
Immediately check the casualty for breathing and heartbeat.
If the casualty is not breathing, begin artificial respiration.
Send for help.
Once the casualty is breathing, cool any burned areas with cold water and cover them with a clean, dry, non-fluffy dressing.
The treatment for electrical burns is the same as for heat burns. It includes pain relief, prevention and treatment of shock, and infection control.
Electrical burns may lead to paralysis of the respiratory centre, unconsciousness, or instant death.
